6 Places to Donate While Decluttering in Maryland

Match furniture, books, clothing and baby essentials with six organizations that publish donation guidance.

Updated November 1, 2026 · Originally published 2020-12-22

Decluttering works best when useful belongings have a realistic next destination. Sort items by type, condition and size before choosing a donation organization. These six Maryland resources publish their own acceptance guidance; check it again before packing the car or requesting a pickup.

Six places to consider

1. Second Chance accepts a range of resaleable household goods, furniture and building materials. Send photographs and dimensions when requesting collection, particularly for substantial pieces or architectural salvage.

2. Habitat Chesapeake ReStore accepts qualifying furniture, renovation materials, appliances and housewares. Its donation page distinguishes acceptable items from exclusions and explains pickup options.

3. Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake accepts clean, gently used clothing and selected household goods. Review the exclusions first: a nearby donation center does not necessarily accept every category in your home.

4. Baltimore Furniture Bank considers usable furniture and household essentials. Submit a request before arranging delivery, because appointments, item needs and pickup coverage affect what it can receive.

5. The Book Thing of Baltimore accepts books under its current donation schedule and quantity limits. Use the live donation page to choose a day; do not leave boxes outside when donations are closed.

6. ShareBaby accepts specified baby and children’s essentials, with different condition requirements for clothing, hygiene supplies and other items. Match each donation against the current list rather than assuming all baby equipment is eligible.

Make the handoff easier

Clean items, keep sets together and label bags or boxes by category. Photograph large pieces and disclose damage honestly. Keep items you need during a move separate from donation piles so important documents and everyday supplies do not disappear in the rush.

Arrange the handoff before your moving deadline and keep a backup plan for items an organization cannot accept. A donation receipt does not by itself establish a tax deduction; ask your tax adviser about your circumstances. For unusable items, consult your local disposal or recycling guidance instead of passing the problem to a nonprofit.
