COUNTY GUIDE

Baltimore County

Room to spread out, minutes from the city.

Baltimore County runs from the city line north to the Pennsylvania border and east to the Chesapeake. The housing changes block by block: 1950s brick colonials in the inside-the-beltway neighborhoods, townhome communities along the I-83 corridor, and acreage with barns in the northern horse country.

  • I-83, I-695 and the light rail link the county to downtown Baltimore
  • Baltimore County Public Schools serves the county; assignment follows the address
  • The county runs its own police, trash and permitting — separate from the city

01

Where the county makes sense

Start with your weekday. If you commute south into the city, the light rail and I-83 corridor towns keep the trip short. If you work along the Beltway or in Hunt Valley, the northern and western suburbs save you the doubling back.

02

What to check before you offer

Older neighborhoods often mean mature trees, original windows and sewer lines worth inspecting. In the northern towns, confirm well and septic details where they apply, plus any recorded easements on larger parcels.

03

Taxes, schools and services

Review property assessments with Maryland SDAT, tax bills and services with the local government, and school assignment with the school district. A mailing address alone does not establish jurisdiction.

For current taxes, permits, services and school assignment, use Baltimore County government . Always confirm details for the specific address.
